People's Portraits

  • Laban Building Creekside London, England, SE8 United Kingdom (map)

When capturing a person in their truest form, I believe as a photographer you mustn’t change the way they present themselves to you and your lens. I try to capture whatever is happening in front of me, without judgement. This way, I end up with a photograph that is true to that person. This project with Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance reflected the essence of what I believe in; we can all learn from real people and their stories if we take time to listen.

I started by getting to know these people of Lewisham, really listening to what they had to say, earning their trust. I decided early on that I wanted to photograph them in a place that captures who each of them are, and what better place than their homes. From houses created and decorated in the style of the person, I was able capture personalities and hobbies all in one place.

They all have one thing in common, Trinity Laban’s Inspired not Tired programme of music and dance activity for older adults. Although some of the subjects won’t know each other directly, they all have a beautiful trait in common, each one of them looks at life in a truly positive light. Something we can all learn from.
